Its scope covers the humanities, social sciences and economics. Its website provides information on the Institute's history, research, staff, publications, events, library, and scholarships. It also has a very useful trilingual (English, German, Japanese) glossary of demographic terminology, part of the Institute's recent major research initiative on demographic change in Japan. The site is largely accessible in German, English and Japanese versions, but some parts are only in German. These include two of the Internet (online) resources: the Bandō collection (materials from the Bandō prisoner-of-war camp in Tokushima prefecture); and a database of special collections in Japanese university libraries. However, the Institute's online library catalogue can be searched in any of the three languages. Jeffrey’s Japanese <-> English dictionary server Jeffrey’s Japanese <-> English dictionary server is an online two-way dictionary based largely on data compiled by Jim Breen of Monash University and now held by the Electronic Dictionary Development and Research Group there. As well as a general dictionary, there are specialist files for terms relating to Buddhism, linguistics, Japanese place names, various sciences, law, finance and marketing. The dictionary can be used even with browsers that do not support Japanese fonts. The website also has a database of over 12,000 kanji (Chinese characters as used in Japan) that can be searched via various methods. Jim Breen's WWWJDIC Jim Breen's WWWJDIC website is a Japanese-English online dictionary server. Searches can be carried out in a general dictionary and in various specialist dictionaries, such as: Buddhism; linguistics; Japanese names; finance; marketing; law; and various sciences. Example sentences are provided for many words, and verb conjugation tables can be displayed. Japanese words can be inputted in Japanese script or romanised form. It is also possible to search for translations of English words into Japanese, but since the headwords are Japanese, results are not comprehensive. Kanji (Chinese characters as used in Japan) can be looked up via their radicals. In addition, there are dictionary files for Japanese to Dutch, French, German, Hungarian, Russian, Spanish and Swedish. jeKai Japanese-English dictionary project The jeKai Japanese-English dictionary project is an online Japanese-English dictionary compiled by a group of volunteers in different countries that provides more comprehensive information for each entry than most online dictionaries. The number of entries is very limited, and the choice of words and phrases is idiosyncratic, but all the more interesting for that. The level of detail varies, but at least several sample sentences from recent (often online) sources with explanations are usually provided for each entry. There is an index of all entries as well as a search facility. A subject guide lists entries that provide detailed information on certain topics, including: keigo (honorific language or respect language); Japanese writing systems; pitfalls; slang words formed by inverting syllables; discriminatory language; terrestrial life; and baseball terms. A note on the site states that "As of 2007, the jeKai project has been dormant for several years". Rikai The Rikai website is an online two-way translation tool for Japanese and English. Text extracts or URLs are pasted in, then hovering the mouse over parts of the text brings up translations of the words and readings for Japanese words written in kanji (Chinese characters as used in Japan). The data comes from Jim Breen's online dictionary, WWWJDIC. The website also provides an online flashcard system for learning and testing oneself on kanji, and a 'kanji map' section that shows the various elements of individual characters and sample compound words. The site could be used by learners to test themselves on their understanding of texts, although teachers may wish to discourage students from using it as a shortcut to translating. As well as Japanese-English and English-Japanese, the site offers translation tools for English to Spanish and Chinese to English. Birth of the constitution of Japan The National Diet Library's online exhibition titled 'Birth of the Constitution of Japan' presents the key events and documents relating to the postwar Japanese constitution in a very accessible way. The site would be useful to researchers and students. It presents the background information in both Japanese and English, but the documents are in their original languages (i.e. Japanese or English). The home page leads to three broad sections: Outline; Documents with Commentaries; and Main Issues. The Outline provides a detailed chronological description of the process of drafting the constitution and the negotiations between the Allied Occupation and the Japanese government, and there are embedded links to other relevant parts of the site. The documents are presented in a list with thumbnail images leading to full-text versions, images of the originals, and informative commentaries. The Main Issues section introduces important aspects of the new constitution, again with embedded links to other parts of the site. In addition to the three sections highlighted on the home page, there are sections devoted to: archives of other relevant documents; key historical figures; a glossary and abbreviations; a list of documents; text of the constitution; a short bibliography; and links to other relevant sites. Japanese-language proficiency test The Japanese-Language Proficiency Test, administered by the Japan Foundation and Japan Educational Exchanges and Services, is the most widely recognised qualification for learners of Japanese. Its website provides much valuable information in both Japanese and English. The site is divided into three broad sections. The first gives background information, such as an outline of the content of the test, but its main feature is sample questions in downloadable PDF files from the three parts of the test at the four different levels. There is also a summary of the previous year's results. The second section has details of the application procedure (inside and outside Japan). The final section, Notices, has up-to-date news announcements, such as changes to the test. Self-assessment of Japanese reading skills This microsite on Self-assessment of Japanese reading skills is maintained by language instructors from the Japanese programme at the Nathan campus of Griffith University, Australia. It presents images of authentic materials (photos of signs, packaging etc.) with comprehension tasks. The extracts range from single words at beginners' level to more complex texts. At the time of cataloguing there were only about ten texts and associated tasks at the lower levels, but more are gradually being added. Descriptions of the different levels are given under the heading 'ISLPR reading scale'. The site would be useful to learners of Japanese for independent study, and the fact that the materials are clearly authentic makes them particularly useful and interesting. Japanese classical literature at bedtime 'Japanese classical literature at bedtime' is a blog with readings (audio files, mainly MP3 files) by a Japanese native speaker of selections from a wide variety of classical and modern Japanese literature, including poems and short stories as well as extracts from novels. The readings are supplemented with links to e-texts where available, and some others have transcripts. Sources include: the Tale of Genji (Genji Monogatari) and the Pillow Book of Sei Shonagon; the poetry of Basho; The Love Suicides at Sonezaki by Chikamatsu Monzaemon (play); the supernatural stories of Lafcadio Hearn; stories by Ryunosuke Akutagawa; and the modern classic, Night of the Milky Way Railway (Ginga Tetsudō no Yoru), by Kenji Miyazawa. It presents extracts of spoken Japanese with tasks to check comprehension skills, and answers are given in written form. The extracts range from single words at beginners' level to news reports at level 3; there were 27 texts and tasks on the site at the time of cataloguing and more are gradually being added. The site would be useful to learners of Japanese for independent study. Ukiyo-e techniques This website is part of the Learning Object program at Wesleyan University in Connecticut, and is aimed at helping students, collectors and researchers to better understand the Ukiyo-e technique of printing. Using the collection of 18th and 19th century Japanese prints of the Davison Art Center as its starting point, the site uses utilises flash technology, displaying photographs and video clips to demonstrate the technique. The resource is divided into sections including Introduction, Techniques, Timelines, Philosophy, and a Gallery whose prints can be viewed according to technique, including embossing, mica technique and one-sided gradation. There is also a gallery of works by master printmaker Keiji Shinohara. UCSF Japanese woodblock print collection This website provides information and enlargeable images of the collection of almost 400 Japanese woodblock prints, held by the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Library and Center for Knowledge Management. The collection is based on health-related themes and is considered to be the largest collection of woodblock prints related to health in the United States. The prints provide a fascinating insight into traditional Japanese attitudes towards illness, the human body, women's health, religion, and the West. The prints can be searched, browsed or viewed by theme, including: contagious diseases (such as smallpox, cholera, or measles); drug advertisements for medicines or cosmetic products; foreigners and disease; religion and health; and women's health (including some vivid depictions of pregnancy and childbirth). A record description is provided for each image, which includes the title in Japanese and English, the creator of the resource (where known), the date (where known), and the type of resource. Ningyo do bunko database The Ningyo do bunko online database offers a large collection of over 60 galleries of antique watercolour designs for Japanese toys. The galleries are in Japanese only, so those unfamiliar with the language will struggle with the limited contextual details. Navigation by thumbnail image and arrows is a simple enough affair, however, and the galleries are easy enough to browse. The images have been digitized at a reasonably high resolution and most may be magnified on-screen. Kanji clinic The Kanji Clinic website is based on a monthly column in the 'Japan Times' by Mary Sisk Noguchi, a retired associate professor at Meijo University in Nagoya, Japan. The columns (around 90 online at the time of cataloguing) are about Chinese characters as used in Japan and focus on the 1,945 characters for general use (jōyō kanji). The author aims to 'provide practical advice and inspiration to non-Japanese adults striving to achieve literacy in Japanese'. Each column has a theme and deals with relevant kanji and compound words, explaining the background and cultural context. The site also has a section of book reviews, which deals mainly with kanji dictionaries, guides to learning kanji and kanji software. Articles about learning kanji, loanwords (gairaigo), Japanese names, the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test, bilingualism and other relevant topics appear in the section called Other Articles. This is a useful and accessible site that teaches much about life in contemporary Japan and ancient China as well as about the script.
